News General The Hartford "12"

There are many ways God has blessed our congregation over the 17 years of our existence. Certainly one big one that has just recently taken place is the arrival of 12 college interns to serve in the ministry for the months of June and July in our church.

The idea to have 12 summer interns began as a dream in an elders and evangelists’ meeting at the conclusion of the summer of 2010. We began to think and pray about how to revive this part of the year that is often more a vacation time for many. We also noticed that many of our own college students had great dreams for the summer but headed off to Americorps, HOPE worldwide programs or other internships because of their desire to change the world.

After beginning with the dream, the next need was for the funding to make it happen. The challenge to increase our contribution for 2011 in hopes of adding to staff (Heather Ferrer), potentially renting or buying another or larger facility and adding interns was then presented to the entire congregation. The amazing response of the disciples here has allowed us to proceed and on Wednesday, June 1, “The Hartford 12” were introduced to our congregation.

The interns have come from many places: Kyle Woodley and Titus Walelo (Hartford); Kelsey Allen, Jenna Allen and Joseph Porter (Boston); Andrea Lager (Chicago); Ryan Chacon, Trent Conkling and Brandon Owens (Florida); Shannelle Sharpe and Becky Glenney (Storrs, CT); and Raeshon Wilson (Richmond, VA).

Already the interns have spoken to the church, shared a performance song for our Connecticut Leadership Team Workshop, shared their faith with hundreds, served the poor and needy, taken prayer walks, participated in many sporting activities, eaten in numerous homes and more.

After only one week, they have already won over our hearts and inspired us. As we join together for a memory-making summer, let’s work, sing and play as one for the glory of God during this very special period of time we have with each other.
